Riders using rabbittransit’s fixed-route bus services in Gettysburg and several other communities will see a new way to pay for trips beginning Tuesday, when the transit agency launches its new rabbitPAY fare collection system and implements its first fare increase in eight years.

The new system will be available on fixed-route services in the Capital Region, Gettysburg, Shippensburg and York, as well as on rabbitEXPRESS, Capital Region Commuter Routes and Stop Hopper services.

rabbitPAY introduces reusable smart cards and a mobile payment app designed to make boarding faster and more convenient. Riders will be able to load fare cards through ticket vending machines, the rabbitPAY mobile app, the rabbittransit website or at customer service offices.

The new system is intended to make public transportation more convenient and accessible by allowing riders to pay with a tap of a smart card or mobile device.

Among the new system’s features are smart card technology, multiple options for reloading fare accounts and improved fare integration across rabbittransit’s service areas. The system also includes fare capping, which automatically limits what riders pay. Once the cost of a daily or monthly pass has been reached, additional rides during that period are free.

The launch also brings a modest fare increase for fixed-route services in Gettysburg, the Capital Region, Shippensburg and York. The increase also applies to rabbitEXPRESS, Capital Region Commuter Routes, Stop Hopper and the Persons with Disabilities and ADA Complementary Paratransit shared-ride programs.

Rabbittransit said the adjustment is the first fare increase for those services since 2018 and is intended to support continued investment in safe, reliable and modern public transportation.
