Rumors swirl about Washington Commanders possibly returning to ‘Redskins’ name

A social media post from the Washington Commanders has reignited speculation that the NFL franchise may be considering a return to its former name: the Redskins.

The team, which officially retired the “Redskins” name in 2020 amid public pressure and controversy, has been known as the Commanders since 2022. But a Friday morning birthday post for former tight end Chris Cooley showed him holding a helmet emblazoned with the original Redskins logo—sparking intense fan discussion and online buzz.

The move has been widely interpreted as more than just a nostalgic gesture. Many fans flooded the comments, calling for the team to revert to its historic name and branding. Whether the post was intentional or not, it has added fuel to ongoing rumors that the franchise’s ownership is actively considering a name reversal.

The name “Redskins” was dropped after years of criticism from activists and Native American groups who viewed it as a racial slur and a harmful stereotype. The change came amid a broader national reckoning with racial and cultural representation in sports.

However, not all voices within Native communities agreed. The Native American Guardians Association and others defended the name as a symbol of pride and heritage, arguing that it was misunderstood and unfairly maligned.

Now, with new leadership in place and quarterback Jayden Daniels ushering in a new era for the team, speculation is growing that the organization may be reevaluating its identity altogether. The team’s silence on the recent helmet photo has only intensified curiosity.

There has been no official word from the Commanders on a name change, but if the online chatter and fan reaction are any indication, the debate over Washington’s football identity is far from over.

I have been a Redskin fan for more than 30 years. My man cave is filled with jerseys, helmets, bobbleheads, flags, books and banners from the last 50 years. I would be delighted to have the Redskin name return to the Team, the woke ideology cannot stand in the way of respect.
