Ryan Kerney announces candidacy for two-year GASD board position

Ryan Kerney announces his candidacy for the School Board in the Gettysburg Area School District. Dr. Kerney is a biologist with a rich teaching experience from middle school to medical school, including several teacher training programs. He is stepping up to fill the two-year position left vacant by outgoing board member Cynthia Ayers. His leadership in multi-institutional research and science education projects, coupled with his extensive volunteer work, reflects his deep commitment to our community.

In addition to his teaching duties, Kerney is the program director for Advancing Science, which is a free lending library of scientific expertise and equipment that serves South-Central Pennsylvania under the statewide Science in Motion program. The program has served Gettysburg and surrounding districts for 30 years and offers standards-aligned lesson plans and subject matter expertise to participating teachers at no cost.

Kerney recently completed a 3-year program with Advancing Science and participating Adams County teachers: “The Partnership for Adams County Environmental Literacy.” This program developed an Environmental Literacy Plan (ELP) for Adams County schools. The plan includes background information on environmental issues impacting the county, as well as teacher resources and lesson plans that are aligned with the new Pennsylvania Science, Technology & Engineering, Environmental Literacy and Sustainability (STEELS) Standards.

If elected, Kerney will bring a fresh perspective to the GASD, focusing on innovative educational initiatives. “There are many untapped educational resources in our area. For instance, the National Cancer Institute (in Frederick) recruits high schoolers from Maryland and West Virginia to work in their labs. GASD should also partner with their programs to give our students these remarkable opportunities,” Kerney said.

“It is unfortunate that Pennsylvania is one of four states that require partisan school board elections. We must focus on academic excellence and preparing our students for the challenges of the 21st century, not the identity politics of social media,” Kerney added, emphasizing his commitment to nonpartisan school governance and the principles of fairness and equality.
