Gettysburg Borough has done everything possible to be as accommodating as possible to local residents and visitors, and has attempted to complete the second phase of construction on North Washington Street without completely shutting down the road. But recent events have caused the Borough to reconsider this decision, according to a release from Borough Manager Charles Gable.
There are regular reports of motorists not following traffic control signage and markings, as well as incidents of motorists being disrespectful to the construction crew, and frequent reports of signage being stolen. Gettysburg Borough Police have been notified of these accounts.
Due to the safety concerns associated with these events and after deliberation between the Borough Engineer, the Borough Public Works Director, and the Borough Manager, Gettysburg Borough has decided to allow/instruct the contractor to shut down North Washington Street in the work zones where they are working.
Road closures shall be completed in accordance with the attached traffic control diagrams, which can be found here https://www.gettysburgpa.gov/sites/g/files/vyhlif3156/f/news/traffic_plan_update_-_press_release_04.26.2025.pdf
The diagrams are the same as the ones used in the first phase of the project with York Excavating. The road closures still allow access to all properties/businesses. All Signs and Barricades are to be deployed at the beginning of each workday and shall be removed at the end of each workday, opening the road to normal traffic.
