Gettysburg’s annual Salsa on the Square will return Friday evening, bringing Latin music, dancing, food and family activities to the heart of downtown.
The outdoor street festival will run from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. Sept. 25 on the first block of Carlisle Street at Lincoln Square.
The event will feature live Latin music along with DJ sets, with dancing open to participants of all experience levels. Local food vendors will offer a variety of selections, and activities for children are also planned.
Salsa on the Square is held during Hispanic Heritage Month and combines entertainment with a celebration of the area’s Latino community and Gettysburg’s sister-city relationship with León, Nicaragua.
This year’s event also coincides with the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States. Organizers are using the occasion to recognize the cultural, economic, religious and social contributions Latino residents have made to Adams County and the nation.
The Latino community has a history in Adams County extending back more than half a century. Many of the first arrivals came from Mexico, initially migrating to the area for work before families began establishing permanent roots in the county.
Over the ensuing decades, the community has become an important part of Adams County, including its agricultural economy, businesses, churches, schools, and civic life.
The festival’s location near historic Lincoln Square provides a prominent setting for recognizing both the county’s past and its continuing cultural development.
Salsa on the Square also highlights Gettysburg’s relationship with León. The two communities have maintained a sister-city connection designed to encourage cultural understanding and exchanges between residents of Gettysburg and the Nicaraguan city.
Friday’s event is open to the community, with activities scheduled throughout the evening.
Salsa on the Square will be held from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. Friday on Carlisle Street adjacent to Lincoln Square in downtown Gettysburg.
