Fans of the popular online puzzle game Wordle will soon see it brought to television, as Savannah Guthrie has been announced as the host of a new primetime game show based on the viral sensation.
The show, set to debut on NBC in 2027, is being produced by Jimmy Fallon’s Electric Hot Dog production company alongside Universal Television Alternative Studio and The New York Times.
Originally launched in 2021 and later acquired by The New York Times in 2022, Wordle became a global phenomenon as millions of players attempted to guess a five-letter word in six tries or fewer each day.
The television adaptation will expand the puzzle into a team-based competition focused on speed, strategy and word-solving skills. Contestants will compete in squads while trying to solve oversized five-letter puzzles for cash prizes.
NBC executives described the series as a natural extension of the network’s long history with game shows. Producers said the program aims to capture the social aspect of Wordle, where players often compare scores, debate strategies and solve puzzles together online.
Guthrie, co-host of NBC’s “Today,” is known to be an enthusiastic Wordle player herself. Fallon praised her ability to combine intelligence, warmth and humor, qualities he said make her an ideal host for the show.
Production is expected to begin later this year.
