Two olive ridley sea turtles have made history by nesting on Southern California beaches — the first documented natural sea turtle nests on the U.S. West Coast.
According to NOAA Fisheries, the first turtle was observed laying eggs near Seal Beach in Orange County on Sept. 16. Three days later, a second turtle nested about eight miles away near Huntington Beach Pier.
Because of a forecast tropical storm, eggs from the first nest were transferred to the Aquarium of the Pacific for protected incubation before eventual release near their nesting beach.
