September 2023 Cultural Arts Calendar

September brings a return to routines with the start of school, poetry readings, concerts, plays and all sorts of activities that enjoyed a summer hiatus. With the return of Gettysburg College students there will be opportunities to see and hear their performances as well.   In addition to our very own beloved Gettysburg Chamber Orchestra, some remarkable young performers will be coming to town.  Invite a friend to enjoy some world-class talent right here!

Friday September 1 at 7:00 pm – First Friday Poetry                              Ragged Edge Coffee House

The season opener features Pittsburgh-based poet Jan Beatty.  The program starts with an open mic followed by the featured reader.   Grab some yummy baked goods, coffee or tea before you climb the stairs for the reading.  Beatty has had eight books published including her memoir, American Bastard (2021) that won the Red Hen Nonfiction Award. A faculty emerita member at Carlow College, she previously worked as a waitress, abortion counselor, and in maximum security prisons.   This program is free and all are welcome.

Friday September 8 at 8:00 pm – Time for Three                                                    Majestic Theater

Defying convention and boundaries, Time for Three stands at the busy intersection of classical music, Americana, and singer-songwriter. Bonded by an uncommon blend of instruments and vocals, Charles Yang (violin), Nick Kendall (violin), and Ranaan Meyer (double bass), have found a unique voice of expression. To hear them live is to hear the various eras, styles, and traditions of Western music fold in on themselves and emerge anew.     This concert is presented by Gettysburg College’s Sunderman Conservatory of Music and funded by the Sunderman Chamber Music Foundation.

Tickets are free but reservations are required. Call (717)337-8200 or visit the theater box office for tickets.
