September 4 from 4-6 pm – Art Exhibition Opening  Schmucker Art Gallery

The art gallery on the Gettysburg College campus presents two new exhibits – A Portrait of the Artist, 1525 – 1825: Prints from the Collection of the Sarah Campbell Blaffer Foundation and Violet Oakley: A Message to the World from Pennsylvania. The print exhibit runs from September 5 – December 14 and the Oakley exhibit from September 5-November 9. Hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am – 4 pm.  www.gettysburg.edu/art

September 6 at 7 pm – Poetry First Friday                                Ragged Edge Coffee House

The 2024-2025 season begins with poet Joseph Ross. The author of five books of poetry, Mr. Ross teaches high school English and Creative Writing. His poems have appeared in many anthologies and journals and he serves on the Poetry Board at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. The session begins with an open mic at 7 pm and listeners may bring a poem to share. Pick up some baked goods and a coffee downstairs. Free admission. www.theraggededgecoffeehouse.com

September 6 at 8 pm – The Crossing (Chamber Choir)          Christ Chapel, Gettysburg College

The Sunderman Conservatory welcomes the GRAMMY Award-winning chamber choir The Crossing, under the direction of Donald Nally, in a program titled “What belongs to me?” The

Crossing specializes in commissioning, performing, and recording new music. Admission is free and seating will be available on a first-come-first-served basis. No tickets are required. Enjoy Cole Porter’s classic musical Anything Goes with plenty of singing and dancing. This show is a hilarious shipboard romp wrapped in one of Cole Porter’s most magical scores! Sunday September 8 at 4 pm – Gettysburg Chamber Orchestra  Lutheran Seminary Chapel

Music Gettysburg presents the first Gettysburg Chamber Orchestra concert of the season under the baton of Music Director Ryan Kozak. Mozart’s “Haffner” Symphony will open the program followed by perennial favorite Tchaikovsky Symphony Number 5. Admission and parking are free with a freewill offering collected at intermission.  www.musicgettysburg.org

September 13 at 7 pm – Annual Concerto Competition Schmucker Recital Hall

Sunderman Conservatory students compete for the honor of playing a concerto movement with the College Orchestra in their spring concert. Admission is free and seating is available on a first- come-first-served basis. www.gettysburg.edu/sunderman

September 17 at 7:30 pm – Incantare (Early Music Consort) St. James Lutheran Church

Incantare’s concerts highlight the musical and cultural connections of under-explored musicians from the Renaissance and early Baroque periods. The consort of sackbuts (early trombones) and violins has a long history and a unique sound, making it the perfect medium for performing beautiful works from these early music periods. Brought to us by the Gettysburg Community Concert Association, tickets are only $50 for four great concerts here in Gettysburg plus ten more shows in Waynesboro and Hagerstown. September 21 from 10 am-4 pm – Historic Barn Tour of Gettysburg and Adams County

HGAC presents their annual tour of six historic barns in the Gettysburg/Adams County area,

Proceeds benefit the HGAC Barn Preservation Project and Grant Program. These barns are works of art and not to be missed! Check-in to start the self-driving tour is from 10 am -noon at the Round Barn. Advance tickets are $35, $40 the day of the tour, and children are free. www.HGAConline.org

September 23 at 12 and 7 pm – Art: A Cinematic Experience Majestic Theater

Picasso – A Rebel in Paris embarks on a journey through Picasso’s Paris, amidst sunshine and shadow, convictions and contradictions, from a young, impoverished foreigner to one of the most important icons of the 20th-century. This cinematic journey through Paris helps to gain a deeper understanding of his work and spirit. Tickets are $18. www.gettysburgmajestic.org

September 26 at 7:30 pm – Sunderman Conservatory Orchestra Concert Majestic Theater Conservatory students present their first orchestra performance of the school year under the baton of Dr. Cesar Leal. Tickets are $5 at the door and students are free with ID. www.gettysburgmajestic.org

September 27 at 8 pm – SC Wind Symphony and Jazz Ensemble Concert  Majestic Theater Sunderman Conservatory students present their initial Wind Symphony (aka Band) and Jazz Ensemble Concert. Tickets are $5 and students are free with ID. www.gettysburgmajestic.org

September 27 at 7 pm – StoweGood                                                                                                          Gettysburg Community Theatre Singer-songwriter, best-selling author and cancer survivor Stowe Dailey teams up with Karen Taylor Good, Grammy-nominated songwriter for many artists and movie soundtracks, to share an intimate evening of story and song. These Nashville hit songwriters will deliver a night of music you will never forget. Check the website for tickets.

Gail Jones has enjoyed a twenty-five-year career as a music educator in Pennsylvania and Maryland public schools as well as teaching music education methods at Gettysburg College for over a decade. She has also served as a guest conductor, French horn player, and private music instructor.

Gail has a deep appreciation for live music performances of all genres and encourages Adams County residents to attend the many concerts offered in our community.
