September News from GARA

Greetings from Rec Park (GARA)! On behalf of the GARA Board, Gettysburg Borough, and Cumberland Township authorities, I would like to express our sincere appreciation to several groups for their volunteer efforts.

This past Saturday, during the United Way’s “Day of Caring,” the Gettysburg Area High School wrestling team assisted us with several projects. They sanded and painted picnic tables and benches, as well as conducted general cleanup around the park. More specifically, they cleared brush and helped declutter our maintenance area. The team also assisted with the teardown following the very successful Alzheimer’s fundraising event at the south end of the park. The boys and their coaches were extremely helpful. It’s no wonder our wrestling team is so successful, given the work ethic and outstanding role models provided by the coaching staff.

We were also recently visited by trades instructor Mr. Dave Snyder and his students from the Adams County Technical Institute. Their first project with us will be installing our new playground at the north end of the park. The playground was funded by a county green space grant and the Tim Cline Foundation. One of our board members, Mr. Steve Toddes, will serve as project manager and will work with Dave, the borough team, and the ACTI students to install the playground. It will be located to the right of the Charlie Sterner building, next to the American Legion pavilion. Some of the equipment is designed to accommodate young people with physical disabilities.

Finally, we would like to thank the small team from the Lincoln Intermediate Unit’s STEPS program, who visit us on Wednesday mornings throughout the school year. They assist with general cleaning of our facilities and always do an excellent job.

We hope everyone in the community will come out and enjoy the wonderful atmosphere here at the park. Afternoons and evenings are especially lively with youth sports and a variety of programs. We look forward to seeing you soon!
