Shapiro admin asks USDA to reconsider $13 million in cuts to Pennsylvania food banks

Governor Josh Shapiro is appealing the USDA’s abrupt termination of Pennsylvania’s $13 million Local Food Purchasing Assistance (LFPA) contract, which supports 189 state farms and 14 food banks. The program enables food banks to receive fresh, local produce, but the USDA’s cancellation threatens this vital supply chain.

Shapiro, speaking at the Central PA Food Bank, criticized the “unlawful” decision, highlighting the program’s success in delivering over $28 million in federal funds to Pennsylvania farmers over two and a half years. He emphasized the impact on both farmers, who rely on the revenue, and food banks, which face significant losses. The Central PA Food Bank alone anticipates a $120,000 monthly deficit, translating to 500,000 fewer meals.

Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding condemned the disruption to planned operations, stating, “Cancelled federal funding hurts Pennsylvania farmers, along with food bank customers—hungry families, children, military veterans, and seniors.” Farmers like Amy Brickner, who supplies dairy, and Lela Reichart, a potato grower, attested to the program’s crucial role in their operations and community contributions.

The governor’s 2025-26 budget proposes an additional $8 million for related food assistance programs. Shapiro’s administration is prepared for further legal action if the USDA does not reinstate the LFPA funding. State leaders, including representatives from the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau and the legislature, voiced strong support for Shapiro’s stance, emphasizing the program’s importance in combating food insecurity and supporting Pennsylvania’s agricultural sector.
