Shapiro administration highlights safety and accessibility of updated COVID-19 vaccine

The Shapiro Administration will today underscore the safety, effectiveness, and availability of the updated COVID-19 vaccine as Pennsylvania enters another respiratory virus season.

Secretary of Health Dr. Debra Bogen and Insurance Commissioner Michael Humphreys will visit See-Right Pharmacy in Harrisburg today to emphasize the importance of vaccination and demonstrate its accessibility by receiving their own COVID-19 shots at the event.

The visit is part of the administration’s ongoing effort to ensure Pennsylvanians have clear, evidence-based information about vaccines. Earlier this month, Governor Josh Shapiro signed an executive order protecting residents’ access to vaccines and reaffirming the state’s commitment to science-based public health guidance. The Department of Health also issued updated recommendations to help health professionals and the public make informed decisions about vaccinations ahead of the winter season.

The latest version of the COVID-19 vaccine has been updated to protect against severe illness caused by new variants expected to circulate during this year’s respiratory virus season. Health officials and major U.S. medical organizations continue to recommend vaccination for everyone six months and older to reduce the risk of hospitalization and serious disease.

State officials noted that most insurance plans cover the COVID-19 vaccine at no cost to patients. For those who are underinsured or uninsured, vaccines are available for free at local State Health Centers and Federally Qualified Health Centers across Pennsylvania.

Bogen emphasized that vaccination remains a key tool in preventing strain on hospitals during the colder months when COVID-19, flu, and other respiratory viruses tend to spread more easily. Humphreys also highlighted that insurance providers are required to ensure cost-free access to the vaccine for eligible Pennsylvanians.

Today’s event at See-Right Pharmacy, located at 2647 North 6th Street in Harrisburg, is one of several public outreach efforts aimed at boosting awareness of vaccine availability and reinforcing confidence in the updated COVID-19 shot.

Health officials encourage all Pennsylvanians to contact their health care provider, pharmacy, or local health department to schedule vaccination appointments as respiratory virus season intensifies.
