Shapiro’s review of Harris book is less than glowing

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro pushed back this week against claims made about him in former Vice President Kamala Harris’s new memoir, “107 Days,” reacting with frustration to passages describing his vice-presidential vetting process and his conduct during their conversations. The comments surfaced in a profile published Wednesday in The Atlantic, which detailed the governor’s response to excerpts recounting Harris’s view of their interactions during her 2024 campaign.

According to the profile, Harris wrote that Shapiro dominated their discussion when he was considered as a potential running mate and pressed for influence over decision-making. She also described him asking about personal details related to the vice-presidential residence, including the size of the Naval Observatory home and whether artwork from Pennsylvania could be displayed there.

Shapiro dismissed the depictions as inaccurate and misleading, arguing that questions about responsibilities and expectations are routine in discussions of a possible governing partnership. He also suggested that Harris’s descriptions were shaped by the demands of selling a political memoir. The profile noted that Shapiro’s initial reaction showed clear irritation before he tempered his comments.

Harris ultimately selected Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate. Shapiro, widely viewed as one of the Democrats’ rising national figures, remained a key surrogate during the campaign but later criticized aspects of the party’s strategy after President Trump won Pennsylvania in 2024. The governor has repeatedly argued that Democrats need to engage more consistently with communities where the party has lost ground.
