When you hear the word library, what do you picture? A quiet room, maybe. Rows of dusty books. A stern librarian whispering “shhh” at the smallest noise.
At the Adams County Library System, we’re proud to turn those old assumptions and stereotypes on their head.

Yes, we still offer books – thousands of them, in fact – but our services, spaces, and events have grown far beyond the traditional. Today’s library is a vibrant hub of connection, creativity, and community. Whether you’re here to learn, explore, create, or simply find your people, there’s something for everyone.
Step inside on any given day and you might find a live music performance echoing through the building, a crafting workshop in full swing, or a group of patrons learning how to use their devices. Libraries today are no longer just about quiet study – they are about joyful learning and shared experience.
Starting in September, we’ll be launching our First Friday Jam Sessions, inviting local performers into the library to kick off First Friday festivities. It’s one of many ways we’re working to make the library an active part of the downtown arts and culture scene. We’ll also be kicking off a brand-new Books and Brews book club – meeting at local bars and restaurants to talk about books over drinks and food. Because who says book discussions only happen in meeting rooms?
Interested in learning more about local history, cooking for yourself, or improving your self-care? The library has you covered! We offer programs every day for all ages, covering these topics and much more. Whether you’re into crafting, financial wellness, health and fitness, creating your own tabletop game, or even playing bingo—it’s all available here.
Our collections have expanded, too. In addition to books, DVDs, and audiobooks, you can now check out items from our Library of Things – including puzzles, games, crafting kits, health materials, and more. We even offer a Seed Library where you can pick up packets of seeds to plant at home, completely free. It’s all part of our mission to support creativity, wellness, and sustainability in our community.
We also know that not every learning moment happens on-site. That’s why we offer digital resources, downloadable books, streaming movies, and remote access to research tools with a library card. Whether you’re a student, job seeker, parent, or simply curious, we’re here to support your needs and goals.
Above all, our library is shaped by the people who walk through its doors. Many of our best ideas – our programs, collections, and community partnerships – come directly from patron suggestions. We love hearing what you want to see next, and we are always evolving in response.
So the next time someone tells you the library is just about silence and storytime, send them our way. We’re rewriting the script – and you’re invited to be part of the next chapter.
