The GCT bar opens one hour before each performance for patrons to enjoy wine, beer, cocktails, sodas, and coffee before and during the show. Silent Sky is a tale of women taking a stand in a man’s world. The play is based on the true story of astronomer Henrietta Swan Leavitt (1868-1921) and her female colleagues at the Harvard Observatory who acted as “human computers,” using math and measurement to chart the skies. Without ever being allowed to touch a telescope — a task prohibited to women at the turn of the 20th century — Leavitt discovered a method to measure the distances of faraway galaxies and paved the way for modern astronomy. The men took the credit for their hard work, discovering things about the stars before we even knew just how vast and beyond the skies truly are. This poignant and thought-provoking play is a celebration of determination, curiosity, and the enduring power of women to make a difference.

Under the direction of Karen Land, the cast includes Sara Bollinger, Carrie Conklin, Gabriel Cook, Annette Perkins, and Ana Rosenbrien, with production assistance by Cory Metcalf and Buff Wills, and lighting design by Nicholas Ryan.
GCT hopes to see YOU at the theatre this year. Subscribe for free to the email list to be kept up to date on all educational, volunteer, and performance opportunities. Additionally, on the website you can order tickets, register for classes, and make donations. www.gettysburgcommunitytheatre.org
