“What will we tell our children if we fail to protect our planet?”
Luhrs Performing Arts Center at Shippensburg University presents Small Island Big Song, a live music and multimedia concert on Monday, March 25, 2024, at 7 pm at Luhrs Performing Arts Center, 475 Lancaster Drive in Shippensburg, PA.
The concert features indigenous musicians from Indian and Pacific Ocean islands including Sammy (Merina heritage, Madagascar), Aremistic (Tahitian heritage, Tahiti (French Polynesia)), Yuma Pawang (Atayal heritage, Taiwan), Sam Roem ( Wamena heritage, West Papua and Indonesia), Richard Mogu (Magi heritage, Papua New Guinea), Mea Joy Ingram (Motu heritage, Papua New Guinea & Australia) and Mathieu Joseph (Creole heritage, Mauritius), who perform irresistible oceanic grooves to soulful island ballads against panoramic visuals of the artist’s homelands in a concert that combines music, film, spoken word and dance.
The production is made possible with support from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Shippensburg University Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and Commission on Human Understanding, Climate Solutions, the Center for Land Use and Sustainability, Conodoguinet Creek Watershed Association, Yellow Breeches Watershed Association and Middle Spring Watershed Association.
Small Island Big Song will also present a morning matinee performance at 10 a.m. on March 25th for local schools students from Cumberland, Franklin and Dauphin counties.
The Small Island Big Song concert is part of a larger multi-platform project that includes a documentary film and several full-length albums, uniting indigenous musicians who share an ancient seafaring ancestry across the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Composed, recorded, and filmed with the artists, in the languages and with the instruments of the artists’ homelands, Taiwanese producer BaoBao Chen and Australian music producer and filmmaker Tim Cole have created an epic contemporary and relevant musical statement from a region at the frontline of global cultural and environmental challenges, as islands in their region are threatened by rising sea levels.
Tickets are available through luhrscenter.com or by calling 717-477-SHOW. To learn more about the whole project, please visit www.smallislandbigsong.com.
