Social Security payments will continue despite shutdown

As Congress continues negotiations on a new federal budget, the federal government remains shut down — but Social Security recipients can rest assured that their payments will continue without interruption, according to the Social Security Administration (SSA).

The SSA confirmed that monthly benefits will still be issued on time and in full, regardless of the budget impasse. Payment dates will not change, and recipients of Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will continue to receive their funds as scheduled.

While payments remain unaffected, the agency noted that some in-person services may be limited during the shutdown. Local Social Security offices are open, but certain non-essential services may be temporarily unavailable. The SSA is encouraging the public to take advantage of its expanding online tools, which provide access to most core services without the need to visit an office.

Through the my Social Security online portal, users can perform a wide range of tasks, including requesting a replacement Social Security or Medicare card, applying for benefits, and checking the status of applications or appeals. The system also allows users to review their earnings history, access benefit verification letters, and view their latest Social Security statements.

For those who opt for digital delivery, the SSA is offering early access to Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) notices — available up to three weeks before mailed copies — if recipients sign up for online notifications before November 20.

Other convenient features available through the online account include the ability to update addresses, change or set up direct deposit, and print 1099 tax forms. These digital options remain fully operational during the shutdown, ensuring beneficiaries can manage their benefits securely from home.

The agency emphasized that its goal is to minimize disruption for the millions of Americans who depend on Social Security benefits, even while certain government operations are paused. Essential employees continue to manage payment systems and critical services to ensure that all transactions are processed on time.

The SSA is directing beneficiaries and the public to its website for the most up-to-date information about available services during the shutdown. Additional guidance is also provided through the agency’s blog and online help center, offering resources to help users navigate any temporary service changes.
