Baseball Weekend — Regular Season Wraps, Playoffs Await

The Philadelphia Phillies pulled off a 2–1 extra-innings win over the Minnesota Twins, for their 96th win and a bye in the first round of the playoffs. The Pittsburgh Pirates closed their campaign with a 4-1 loss to the Braves. The Orioles closed out a disappointing season with a 3-2 loss to the New York Yankees. The Washington Nationals ended their rebuilding year with an 8-0 loss to the Chicago White Sox.

The Major League Baseball postseason opens tomorrow with four Wild Card matchups across both leagues.

In the American League, the Cleveland Guardians will host the Detroit Tigers in the early game at 1:08 p.m., followed by a primetime rivalry clash between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees at 6:08 p.m.

The National League features the San Diego Padres taking on the Chicago Cubs at 3:08 p.m., while the nightcap has the Los Angeles Dodgers hosting the Cincinnati Reds at 9:08 p.m.

These best-of-three series will determine which teams advance to the Division Series later this week, setting the stage for October’s run to the World Series.

NFL Sunday Results
In a headline game held in Dublin, the Pittsburgh Steelers edged the Minnesota Vikings 24–21. The Washington Commanders, minus starting quarterback Jayden Daniels, lost to the Atlanta Falcons, 34-27; the Baltimore Ravens were bounced by the Kansas City Chiefs, 37-20, with star QB Lamar Jackson sustaining an apparent hamstring injury. In the Sunday night game, the Packers and Cowboys played to a 40-40 overtime tie. The Philadelphia Eagles moved to 4-0 with a 31-25 win over the Buccaneers of Tampa Bay. The Eagles and the Buffalo Bills are the NFL’s only two remaining teams without a loss after four weeks of play.

Ryder Cup Recap
The Ryder Cup concluded over the weekend with Europe reclaiming the trophy on home turf. European players dominated in foursomes and secured the win through strong Sunday singles performance, continuing the trend of U.S. teams struggling in European venues.

College Football — Penn State vs. Oregon
Saturday night produced heartbreak in State College. Oregon defeated Penn State 30–24 in double overtime, sealed by a second-overtime interception that ended the Nittany Lions’ bid for a big comeback win. The Nittany Lions will face UCLA on Saturday.
