The Major League Baseball postseason is off to a dramatic start as the Division Series began this weekend. All four matchups are underway, with some teams quickly seizing control and others locked in tight battles as the series shift to pivotal Game 2s and 3s this week.
American League
The Toronto Blue Jays wasted no time asserting themselves against the New York Yankees. Toronto erupted for 10 runs in Saturday’s opener, rolling to a 10–1 win behind a powerful offensive display. They followed with another outburst on Sunday, taking Game 2 by a 13–7 score to grab a commanding 2–0 series lead heading into Tuesday night’s Game 3 at Yankee Stadium.
In the other AL matchup, the Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners split a pair of close games. Detroit prevailed in Saturday’s opener, 3–2, on an 11th-inning walk-off. Seattle responded Sunday with a 3–2 victory to even the series at 1–1. The teams will resume their series Tuesday afternoon in Seattle.
National League
The Milwaukee Brewers opened their series against the Chicago Cubs in emphatic fashion, winning 9–3 on Saturday to take a 1–0 lead. Game 2 is set for Monday night at 9:08 p.m. ET in Milwaukee.
Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Dodgers struck first against the Philadelphia Phillies, taking Game 1 by a 5–3 score. The clubs will meet again Monday evening at 6:08 p.m. ET in Los Angeles.
Looking Ahead
The Division Series continues Monday through Thursday, with Game 3s beginning Tuesday as the matchups shift to the lower seeds’ ballparks. If necessary, Game 4s are scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday.
For the Yankees, Tuesday’s Game 3 is a must-win to stay alive. Detroit and Seattle enter Game 3 deadlocked, while both National League series could swing significantly based on Monday’s results.

NFL Weekend Wrap-Up: No Unbeatens Remain After Week 5
Week 5 of the NFL season delivered a shakeup at the top, as both the Philadelphia Eagles and Buffalo Bills suffered losses, leaving the league without an undefeated team for the first time this season.
The Detroit Lions extended their strong start with a 37–24 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, riding an explosive offense to pull away in the second half. Washington also made a statement, defeating the Los Angeles Chargers 27–10 behind a balanced performance on both sides of the ball.
In one of the weekend’s most dramatic finishes, the New England Patriots edged the Bills 23–20, handing Buffalo its first loss. The Eagles, meanwhile, were upended on Sunday (not pictured in the scoreboard image), ending their perfect run as well.
The weekend results mean all 32 teams have now taken at least one loss through five weeks—a rarity in recent seasons.
The week concludes with a primetime matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars, kicking off tonight at 8:15 p.m. ET.
Penn State stunned by winless UCLA
Penn State’s College Football Playoff hopes took a crushing blow Saturday night as the Nittany Lions suffered a 42–37 loss to previously winless UCLA at the Rose Bowl — the biggest upset of the 2025 college football season to date.
Coming off a double-overtime defeat to Oregon the previous week, Penn State entered the matchup looking to rebound against a Bruins team that began the day 0–4 and was led by a first-time offensive play-caller. Instead, the Nittany Lions allowed 435 yards and 42 points, falling behind early and failing to recover from a surprise onside kick in the first quarter.
The loss marks Penn State’s second straight defeat and drops its record to 3–2, likely ending realistic hopes of a playoff berth before mid-October. It also raises renewed questions about the leadership of head coach James Franklin, who has built a consistently strong program but continues to stumble in critical games.
Franklin has guided Penn State to five top-10 finishes in 11 seasons and has won two-thirds of his conference games. Yet his record against elite opponents remains a sore point: 1–10 against Ohio State and 4–21 against top-10 teams overall. The administration has invested heavily in this year’s squad, returning key starters, landing prized transfers, and hiring high-profile defensive coordinator Jim Knowles from Ohio State.
Saturday’s defensive breakdown was not part of the plan. Three weeks earlier, UCLA had lost by 25 points at home to New Mexico. Against Penn State, the Bruins delivered their most complete performance of the season, while the Nittany Lions struggled to contain both the passing and rushing attacks.
The result intensifies scrutiny of Franklin’s future. His contract buyout, reportedly around $50 million, makes a coaching change financially daunting. But with a road trip to Ohio State still looming and Penn State’s playoff chances all but gone, speculation about possible future moves has begun.
For now, the loss to UCLA stands as a defining low point in Penn State’s season — and perhaps the beginning of a difficult chapter for a program that entered 2025 with championship ambitions.
