State Funding Is Set For Former Gettysburg Foundry

Nearly $2.4 million in state funding has been allocated for the redevelopment of the former Gettysburg Foundry site in Adams County. The initiative aims to prepare the site for future business use, potentially creating new employment opportunities for the local community.

The Gettysburg Foundry, once a thriving metalworks factory producing aluminum castings and engaging in aluminum smelting, ceased operations in the 1990s due to improper hazardous material disposal. After sitting vacant for decades, the Adams County Industrial Development Authority (ACIDA) acquired the nearly 50-acre site in 2022. ACIDA has since been conducting environmental assessments and remediation to restore and repurpose the blighted property for commercial or industrial use.

The redevelopment project is funded through a combination of state grants and loans provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) Business in Our Sites program. The total project cost is just under $2.4 million, with nearly $1 million coming from a grant and over $1.4 million from a loan with a 3% interest rate and a 20-year term.

Planned site work includes demolishing existing structures, crushing concrete for use as fill material, disposing of remaining materials offsite, and grading the land for proper drainage. Additionally, the project will establish sanitary sewer connections by installing the necessary infrastructure, including 70 manholes, thousands of feet of pipe, and a pump station.

The Commonwealth’s investment in the Gettysburg Foundry site aims to make it a viable and attractive location for potential employers. The ultimate goal is to ready the site for acquisition by a business that will launch operations and hire local workers, thus revitalizing the property and contributing to the economic growth of the community.
