Statement of community support for the National Park Service at Gettysburg

The Gettysburg Foundation, along with local businesses, organizations and community leaders, affirms its support for the National Park Service in honoring the Gettysburg National Military Park and Eisenhower National Historic Site as cornerstones of both our local community and the American narrative; places that have shaped the course of our nation’s history.

These parks draw hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, bringing vitality and opportunity to Adams County and the broader south-central Pennsylvania region. Their impact resonates far beyond our region, drawing visitors from across the country and around the world who seek connection with the past and inspiration for the future.

In 2023 alone, visitors to the Gettysburg National Military Park contributed an estimated $55 million in local spending, supported over 650 jobs, and generated nearly $80 million in total economic contributions (National Park Service, 2023). More broadly, tourism across Adams County –including these historic sites–generated over $786 million in visitor spending and supported more than 5,000 jobs (Destination Gettysburg, 2023).

These figures reveal more than just economic impact; they demonstrate the deep and lasting public connection to Gettysburg’s story. This bond has been nurtured through the dedicated stewardship of the National Park Service and a network of partners who work together to safeguard both the tangible and intangible heritage of this historic place.

The acts of sacrifice, leadership, resilience and reconciliation that define Gettysburg do not linger in the past; they come alive for both visitors and residents, igniting reflection and promoting a deeper understanding of history that continues to shape our lives. Preserving this legacy–ensuring Gettysburg remains both a vibrant and welcoming destination, as well as a model of public stewardship–is a shared responsibility that requires ongoing community support and a commitment to protecting its natural and historical resources.

Amid broader challenges to national heritage sites across the country, it is more important than ever for our community to stand united with the National Park Service, support its stewardship of these irreplaceable resources, and preserve Gettysburg as a living testament to courage, sacrifice, and the ideals of freedom and equality.

We invite you, your family, and your friends to experience this historic place with us as we continue to honor the past and welcome all who seek meaning in these hallowed grounds.
