Summer Classic Movies Return on June 3 at the Majestic Theater

The Majestic Theater at Gettysburg College celebrates another year of classic films during the annual Summer Classic Movie series in the historic Main Hall. From June 3 to August 19, every Wednesday at 7:30 PM, hundreds of patrons will gather to enjoy a dozen classic films, spanning six decades and various genres. This summer tradition began under Founding Executive Director Jeffrey Gabel as a homage to President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Mamie Eisenhower attending Westerns at the Majestic on Wednesday evenings.

“The Summer Classics bring together people from all corners of our community for entertainment the way it was meant to be experienced – as a group! Join your friends and neighbors to laugh, gasp, and applaud, whether it is a movie you’ve seen a dozen times or one you’ve never gotten around to seeing. Our offering this year reflects some of the most requested titles from our regular devotees as well as some forgotten gems that are sure to stun on the giant screen,” stated Majestic Theater Executive Director Brett Messenger.

The Summer Classic series begins on June 3 with the year’s oldest movie, Samson and Delilah (1949), an American epic romantic drama that became one of the highest-grossing films ever at the time of its release.

Buckle up and jump 44 years ahead in release dates, while also going back to prehistoric times with Jurassic Park (1993). This classic Steven Spielberg film will be screened on June 10, one day shy of the 33rd anniversary of its release on June 11, 1993.

The Summer Classic series is not complete without an Alfred Hitchcock film, so James Stewart will return to the Majestic’s big screen in Vertigo (1958) on June 17. Following the Hitchcock thriller, get ready to laugh with The Pink Panther (1963) on June 24 with slapstick stars David Niven, Peter Sellers, and Robert Wagner.

Bring the family together and root for the underdogs on July 1 with TheMighty Ducks (1992). July continues with Blade Runner: The Final Cut (1982) on July 8, with Harrison Ford trying to save the day in the sci-fi thriller. This year’s Summer Classic musical is The Sound of Music (1965) on July 15. Join Julie Andrews and all of the Majestic crowd in the sing-a-long version of the film!

What did you do, Ray? There are no promises that our minds won’t summon the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man on July 22 during Ghostbusters (1984).

No hypnosis will be needed to travel to the past to see Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour in Somewhere in Time (1980) on July 29.

Spencer Tracy’s final film, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (1967), may make you laugh and cry with Sidney Poitier and Katharine Hepburn in this comedy-drama on August 5.

Julia Roberts may arguably be the queen of rom-coms, with Pretty Woman (1990) serving as her big break, and screening on August 12.

Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, and Sam Elliott close out this year’s Summer Classic series on August 19 in Tombstone (1993), one of the most requested films this year!

All Summer Classic films begin at 7:30 PM. Tickets are $10 per person and can be purchased online or at the Majestic Theater Box Office. For more information, please visit www.gettysburgmajestic.org
