Texas Case Of Bird Flu Is Second In U.S.

The highly pathogenic strain of avian influenza, also known as bird flu, has made its way to Texas.

Officials say the risk of bird flu to the general public is low; however, those who have had close contact with an infected animal are at a higher risk of infection.

The illness can range from mild to severe, and healthcare providers who come across someone who may have the virus are urged to consult their local health department immediately.

This is the second case of bird flu in the U.S., with the previous outbreak starting in Kansas and New Mexico.

The strain of bird flu currently spreading in Texas was first detected in dairy cattle in the Panhandle last week. The outbreak has devastated the Texas cattle industry, which has already been reeling from the effects of wildfires.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has assured consumers that there is no safety risk to the commercial milk supply. However, the milk from the affected cattle is being dumped or destroyed.
