The Gettysburg Foundation Will Be hosting Special Evening Program on Civil War Medicine

The Gettysburg Foundation is excited to share that they will be hosting a special evening program on Civil War medicine Friday, Oct. 9, 2020, at 6 p.m. in the historic barn at the George Spangler Farm &
Field Hospital. Licensed Battlefield Guides Rick Schroeder, an Orthopedic Trauma Surgeon, and Fran
Feyock, a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, will present “The damage was too great to survive.” Turning the Course of Trauma & Disease.

Turning the Course of Trauma & Disease offers a comparison of 19th century and 21st century medicine with a focus on diseases people are still contracting today—with a much better survival rate. Schroeder and Feyock will examine the concept of a triage system that was implemented all those years ago and discuss the differences in the triage system of today. They will introduce American Civil War surgeons much differently than they are often portrayed in Hollywood films.

Schroeder and Feyock will explain how Civil War doctors did the very best they could with the conditions, techniques and resources they had available to them at the time.

This special program lasts about 90 minutes and is limited to 40 attendees. The single general admission ticket price is $15. Friends of Gettysburg receive a $5 discount. Tickets are available for purchase in advance online at GettysburgFoundation.org or by calling Guest Relations at 877-874-2478.

Ticketholders to this special program may drive directly to the property and park onsite. The site will
open at 5 p.m. for ticketholders to explore the grounds. The program will begin promptly at 6 p.m.
Current health and safety protocols and social distancing measures will be followed. Throughout the
property, guests, staff and volunteers will be required to wear a face covering.

The site, a successful family farm before and after the battle, served as the Union Army’s 11th Corps
field hospital where more than 1,900 wounded soldiers—both Union and Confederate—received care.
