It’s National Library Card Sign-Up Month, and so I want to share about something small enough to fit in your wallet and powerful enough to open doors for a lifetime. I’m talking, of course, about your Adams County library card.
At first glance, a library card may appear simple. It looks like just a piece of plastic. It costs you nothing to get and nothing to use, but behind that card is access to a world of opportunity, learning, creativity, and connection. It’s a passport to knowledge and exploration.

With a library card, a child can check out their very first picture book, opening their imagination to endless possibilities. They can explore new worlds, meet characters who feel like friends, and ignite a love for reading that lasts a lifetime. Beyond books, children can participate in storytimes, craft workshops, and other educational programs, all designed to foster curiosity, develop literacy skills, and encourage social growth. A student can find a quiet place to study, get free help with homework, or access research databases that cost hundreds of dollars elsewhere. A job seeker can use computers, get help building their resume, or even print application materials. A parent can download audiobooks for a long road trip. A senior can join a book club, attend a program, or simply find companionship in a familiar space.
It goes far beyond books. Adams County libraries offer access to Wi-Fi, streaming music and movie services, genealogy resources, language learning, technology classes, and so much more. One small card connects you to thousands of dollars in services without ever asking for a credit card number.
But the value of a library card isn’t just financial, though for the record, residents of Adams County saved over $10 million last year by borrowing instead of buying. That little act keeps money in our pockets and books out of landfills. The real value is in what a library card represents. A library card represents equity. It says every person, regardless of age, income, or background, deserves access to information, education, and community.
In a world that often puts up barriers, your library card opens doors.
So if you already have a library card: great! Use it often. If you don’t, then today is the perfect day to get one. And if you believe in what libraries make possible, tell a friend. Help us spread the word.
Because the more people who carry and use a library card, the stronger our community becomes.
