Three officers killed, two wounded in York County shooting

Three police officers were shot and killed, and two others critically wounded, on Wednesday in what state police described as a “domestic-related” investigation in York County. The suspect was killed at the scene, ending what officials said was the deadliest day for Pennsylvania law enforcement in more than a decade.

The shooting erupted near a home on Haar Road in North Codorus Township, where officers had been following up on an incident from the day before. State Police Commissioner Col. Christopher Paris confirmed the deaths, noting that the surviving officers were being treated at WellSpan York Hospital. He did not identify the officers or their agencies, citing the ongoing investigation.

Governor Josh Shapiro traveled to York County late Wednesday, calling the violence unacceptable. “We need to help the people who think that picking up a gun, picking up a weapon, is the answer to resolving disputes,” he said. Shapiro ordered flags across the commonwealth to be flown at half-staff until the officers are laid to rest.

The tragedy marks the deadliest single day for Pennsylvania law enforcement since 2009, when three Pittsburgh officers were killed during a domestic call. It is also the second York County officer killed in the line of duty this year, following the death of West York Patrolman Andrew Duarte in February.

Neighbors said the property where the shooting occurred belonged to the Zumbrum family, longtime residents of the township. A relative has farmed the land since the death of the family’s patriarch in 2023.

Paris said state police, working with York County District Attorney Tim Barker and federal agencies including the FBI and ATF, are leading the investigation. He stressed there was no ongoing threat to the public.

Attorney General Dave Sunday, a former York County prosecutor, called the loss “unfathomable,” while U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi pledged federal support, calling violence against police “never acceptable.”

State police said the investigation spans multiple locations and is expected to continue into Thursday. Further updates are expected as details emerge.
