Three teams kept their seasons alive on Wednesday, while one punched its ticket to the next round, as the MLB postseason delivered high-stakes drama across four elimination games.
The lone team to advance was Toronto, which defeated the New York Yankees 5–2 in Game 4 of the American League Division Series. The Blue Jays clinched the series 3–1 and are headed to the ALCS for the first time since 2016. New York, despite a strong postseason from Aaron Judge, again fell short in October, setting up another winter of tough questions in the Bronx.
Meanwhile, Philadelphia, Detroit, and Chicago each staved off elimination to extend their playoff runs. The Phillies, facing a 2–0 deficit against the Dodgers, exploded for an 8–2 win in Game 3 of the NLDS, ensuring the series will continue. Their offense, which had been quiet in Game 2, came alive against Los Angeles pitching, sparked by two homers from Kyle Schwarber.
In the American League, Detroit evened its series with Seattle at two games apiece after a decisive 9–3 victory, setting up a winner-take-all Game 5 on Friday.
Chicago’s season also survived another day. The Cubs scored four times in the first inning and held on to edge Milwaukee 4–3 in Game 3, trimming the Brewers’ series lead to 2–1.
The Cubs and Brewers will meet again tonight at 9 p.m. EDT, after the Phillies and Dodgers begin game four at 6.
