As we step into the week of Thanksgiving, I find myself reflecting on what this time of year means for our library and for the community we serve. The library is often described as a place of stories- but the truest stories are the ones created by the people who come through our doors. Every visit, every conversation, every small act of kindness shapes who we are.
Our branches are filled with families discovering new books together, students finding a quiet spot to study, adults exploring new skills, volunteers sharing their time, and neighbors connecting through programs and resources. And behind all of that is you- our community. Your belief in the importance of learning, access, and belonging is what keeps our mission not only alive but thriving.
And the library continues to be so much more than books on shelves. Many of you have explored our Library of Things, borrowing items like musical instruments, games, tools, outdoor gear, and so many more resources that make everyday life a little easier and a lot more fun. Others enjoy the library from the comfort of home by using a library card to download ebooks, audiobooks, music, and movies, or to access digital learning tools online. In whatever way you connect with us, you remind us that a library’s impact reaches far beyond our walls.
This season can feel fast-moving, full, and sometimes overwhelming. In the midst of that, I’ve decided to begin each morning with a few quiet moments. Nothing elaborate- just enough time to sit still, take a breath, and think of the things I’m grateful for. It’s a simple practice, but one that brings a sense of calm and clarity I often forget I need. Maybe you have your own way of finding pause; perhaps this week offers the perfect invitation to rediscover it.
As I make my list of things I’m thankful for, this community is always near the top. Your enthusiasm, your kindness, and your support remind us every day why the library matters. You help create the energy that fills our branches. You bring meaning to our programs and purpose to our work. You make the library a place where everyone belongs.
So as Thanksgiving approaches, I want to share my heartfelt appreciation. Thank you for believing in us. Thank you for showing up in ways big and small. Thank you for being part of our library family- not just this week, but all year long.
Wishing you moments of peace, joy, and reflection this season.
Warmly,
Erica Duffy
