Tony Hawks sells his skateboard for charity

Tony Hawk’s famed “900” skateboard, the Birdhouse Falcon 2 deck he rode when he landed the groundbreaking trick at the 1999 X Games, sold this week for $1.15 million through Julien’s Auctions.

The sale, held at the Loews Hotel in Hollywood, drew international attention for its combination of sports history and cultural legacy. Hawk’s “900” — a 900-degree spin completed in mid-air before landing — remains one of the most celebrated moments in action sports, marking the first time the trick was successfully executed in competition.

Now 57, Hawk attended the auction in person, though the identity of the winning bidder was not disclosed. The event included other items from his personal collection, but it was the 1999 deck that stood out, drawing comparisons to some of the most valuable memorabilia in sports, including jerseys worn by Michael Jordan and Babe Ruth.

Julien’s Auctions emphasized that the board represented more than equipment. To many collectors and fans, it symbolized Hawk’s role in transforming skateboarding from a niche sport into a global cultural phenomenon. His influence spans decades of innovation, from tricks like the Ollie 540 and Varial 720 to his video game franchise and philanthropic efforts.

Importantly, a portion of the auction proceeds will benefit The Skatepark Project, Hawk’s nonprofit dedicated to building and improving skate parks in underserved communities. The initiative aims to provide young people with safe, inclusive spaces for recreation, reinforcing Hawk’s commitment to growing the sport at the grassroots level.
