The Major League Baseball trade deadline is less than a week away, and with most teams still mathematically in the playoff hunt, front offices face difficult decisions about whether to buy, sell or stand pat before the 6 p.m. ET deadline on Aug. 3.
Sunday’s action only reinforced how tightly packed the standings remain.
The Phillies ended a four-game losing streak in emphatic fashion, pounding the New York Yankees 11-4 in Philadelphia. Cristopher Sánchez earned his 13th victory of the season as the Phillies collected 13 hits to improve to 57-49. The win kept Philadelphia in the thick of the National League playoff race while providing a boost after a frustrating stretch.
Across Pennsylvania, the Pirates continued their strong play by outslugging the Chicago Cubs 8-7. Pittsburgh improved to 54-52 behind a balanced offensive attack. The victory kept the Pirates above .500 and firmly in the postseason conversation as the trade deadline approaches.
The Orioles were on the wrong end of another nail-biter, falling 3-2 to the Atlanta Braves in 11 innings. Baltimore, now 51-55, battled back with a ninth-inning run to tie, but couldn’t complete the comeback as Atlanta remained among baseball’s top teams at 62-43. The loss was another tough one for an Orioles club still hoping to stay within striking distance of the American League wild-card race.
Washington’s offense continued to impress, erupting for 10 runs in a 10-7 victory over Arizona. The Nationals pounded out 15 hits, scoring in six different innings to improve to 53-52 and continue their climb in the National League standings.
Elsewhere around the majors, the Mets handled the Dodgers 8-3, Boston defeated Toronto 6-1, Tampa Bay edged Cleveland 1-0, Milwaukee rolled past Colorado 11-2, the White Sox routed Houston 12-3, Minnesota outscored the Athletics 11-8, Cincinnati topped St. Louis 5-3, San Diego beat Miami 5-3, Kansas City edged Detroit 5-4, Seattle defeated Texas 6-4 and the Angels slipped past San Francisco 4-3.
With only a handful of clubs clearly out of contention, baseball executives have little time to determine whether to add talent for a playoff push or build for the future before next Monday’s deadline.
Away from the diamond, Philadelphia continues to buzz over the arrival of NBA superstar LeBron James, whose move to the 76ers has energized the city and added another layer of excitement to an already sports-crazed summer.
