United Lutheran Seminary will hold a public service of remembrance, lament and prayer at noon Wednesday, Sept. 30, on its Gettysburg campus.

The service will take place in the Memorial Garden at the Chapel of the Abiding Presence, 61 Seminary Ridge. Organized by the Women of the ELCA at ULS, it marks the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s National Day of Remembrance for Indian Boarding Schools.

The public is invited. Attendees are encouraged to wear orange in remembrance of survivors of the U.S. Indian boarding school system and their families.

The ELCA observance honors Indigenous people affected by a system that forcibly separated Native children from their families, languages and cultures. The effects of that system continue to be felt in Native communities.

“As a seminary community, we are called not only to remember but to repent and to recommit ourselves to the work of healing and justice,” said the Rev. Dr. R. Guy Erwin, ULS president and an enrolled member of the Osage Nation.

The service is part of ULS’s bicentennial year. The seminary also will hold a remembrance service at noon on its Philadelphia campus.
