Students from the Life Skills and Behavior Intervention Classes at Upper Adams Intermediate School recently enjoyed an exciting hands-on learning experience with sprint cars, provided by Mickley Motorsports. This unique educational opportunity, orchestrated by Jaime Kuhn, the Life Skills teacher at the Upper Adams Intermediate School, allowed students to engage directly with various elements of the sprint cars.
During the event, students had the chance to apply mathematical and scientific skills in practical contexts. They measured the circumference of the tires, assessed the dimensions of the front wings, and took readings of the air pressure in the tires. These activities offered the students not only the opportunity to work with real-world data but also to enhance their understanding of measurement and geometry.

“We believe that hands-on experiences are integral to learning and using skills taught in the classroom for practical purposes,” said Kuhn. “Working with the sprint cars has allowed our students to see the relevance of what they learn in the classroom and how it applies in the real world.”
Upper Adams School District Director of Curriculum, Instruction, & Assessment Joseph Albin added, “This experience was perfect for fostering teamwork skills and making connections with classroom content. The students were very enthusiastic and were determined to complete their tasks.” Brayden and Carter Mickley from Mickley Motorsports played key roles in guiding the students through their tasks, answering questions, and providing expertise that gave the students a better understanding of the steps needed to record their data.
The initiative underlines Upper Adams Intermediate School’s commitment to providing students with creative and practical learning activities, reinforcing classroom learning with memorable, hands-on experiences.
