Upper Adams marks 68th annual Color Day with fun, tradition, and community Spirit

The 68th annual Color Day at Upper Adams School District brought students, staff, and community members together on Monday, May 12 for a day of spirited competition and celebration. Held at the district’s sports fields, the event featured students in grades 4 through 6 participating in a full slate of physical activities and athletic contests.

Events included traditional favorites such as the 50- and 100-yard dashes, sack race, three-legged race, quarter-mile run, 200-yard relay, softball throw, foul shots, jump rope, and foxtail throw. The highlight of the day for many was the highly anticipated tug-of-war, which involved all students and drew enthusiastic cheers from the crowd.

Grade-level tournaments were also part of the schedule, with fourth graders playing kickball, fifth graders competing in soccer, and sixth graders taking to the volleyball court. The day began with an African-themed opening ceremony choreographed by Physical Education teacher Deborah Yargar-Reed. Students wore handmade masks they had designed in art class, adding color and culture to the morning program.

The ceremony also included a presentation by the American Legion Post 262 Honor Guard and a performance of the National Anthem by sixth-grade student Hannah Hoptak.

Originally scheduled for the previous Friday, the event was postponed due to rain. “The forecast called for 85% rain, and our fields just don’t drain well,” explained Principal Buckley.

Among the many familiar faces on hand was Mr. Kennedy, a retired sixth-grade teacher beloved by the school community. Celebrating his 60th Color Day, he guided students through the races and offered words of encouragement and support.

The event also showcased strong community involvement. The Arendtsville Lions Club assisted with parking, and high school seniors volunteered to help run the various games and activities.
