The Upper Adams School District proudly carried on a long-standing tradition as students in fourth, fifth, and sixth grades gathered for the 69th annual Color Day today at the Upper Adams Intermediate School in Arendtsville. This year’s cultural focus was Native Americans.
The spirited outdoor day kicked off at 9:30 a.m. with students marching on the the field and presenting their warm-up routine as part of the opening ceremony.
This day is always a highlight of the school year and serves as a culminating event for the district’s physical education curriculum. It brought together students, staff, and families for a day filled with friendly competition, teamwork, and school pride. Participants competed in a variety of activities designed to promote physical fitness and camaraderie.
“I am thankful that the sun was out on this chilly day. The students have been outside practicing and preparing a beautiful routine for the opening of the day,” said principal Sonia Buckley.
Among the featured events were the 50 and 100-yard dash, 200-yard relay, softball throw, relay races, sack race, quarter-mile run, foul shooting contest, jump rope competition, three-legged race, and foxtail throw. There was also soccer, kick-ball, and volleyball on site. The ever-popular fan favorite, Tug-of-War took place as well. Each activity showcased not only athletic ability but also enthusiasm and sportsmanship among the students.
Although ribbons were awarded for first, second, and third place athletes and teams, the day was focused on applying skills learned throughout the school year in physical education classes, and promoted recreation and respect rather than a competitive atmosphere.
The day’s events were thoughtfully organized and choreographed by physical education teacher Deborah Yeager-Reed, whose leadership helped ensure the day ran smoothly while maintaining its tradition of fun and inclusivity. “I am honored to continue this tradition in the Upper Adams School District. I am happy that the rain held off. The day is successful because of all that help make it happen, especially the Canner Foundation. I applied for a grant which I received and that is how the event is mainly funded,” she said.
