The beginning of the track and field season at Gettysburg High School has featured strong starts for multiple athletes on both the boys’ and girls’ teams. Talent and postseason potential are found throughout the ranks of these Warriors. Both teams are off to 3-0 starts.
They kicked things off at James Buchanan High School on Tuesday, March 18th, and came out of the gates firing on all cylinders. A dominant performance on the boys’ side with a 109-41 victory, while the girls came away with an 83-68 win. Both teams swept all three relay races and had strong performances in the 1600m and 3200m from Brody Herbert and Samantha Campbell. Herbert swept the mile-plus races with times of 4:42 in the 1600 and 10:27 in the 2 mile. Campbell finished 2nd in the mile with a time of 5:34.7 and secured 1st place in the 3200m with a time of 11:49. Preston Barnett won the boys 100m with a blistering time of 11.3; Barnett will be exciting to watch to see how low he can go in the 00m with such an impressive time in the 1st meet of the season.

Samantha Campbell (front) & Lily Arnold (back) lead the pack in the 1600m at Warrior Stadium.
Despite the overcast sky, the Gettysburg Warriors welcomed a great crowd to Warrior Stadium for their first home meet on Tuesday, March 25th. On this breezy day, the Warriors swept Greencastle-Atrium by scores of Gettysburg 96-54 for the boys, and on the girls’ side, it was Gettysburg, 83-67. Again, Barnett flew down the home straightaway to win the 100m with a time of 11.1, improving upon his already impressive time of 11.3. Samantha Campbell was dominant in both the 1600m and 3200m races, leaving her competition in the dust by winning the mile by almost 10 seconds and cruising to an easy two-mile victory with a time of 11:29. The second place time in the 3200m was 13:09. Dylan Cunningham secured victory in the javelin with a heave of 160-3. This was an 11m improvement from the week prior.

There have been a few repeat results in these early season meets that bode well for the Warriors. Herbert and Campbell both have yet to lose a 3200m race, as well as Barnett in the 100m. Kyler Benedict has secured first place in both of his races at 110 hurdles; a time of 16.2 against Greencastle-Atrium was a full second improvement from his winning time the week before. Caroline & Lily Bannak have kept both the 100H and 300H races on lockdown so far this season. Caroline has finished 1st in every hurdle race this season, with Lily finishing 2nd in every hurdle race this season. Both dropped a full second off their 100H times as well as dropping two seconds off their 300H times. Kye’mere Robinson has been the king of the jump pits, sweeping all three jumping events in both meets. None of his competitions have been particularly close; he will obviously be a triple threat all season long.

The Warriors made the trek to Boiling Springs High School on April 1st, and perhaps the only “fools” on this day were the ones who thought Gettysburg wouldn’t keep running through its opponents. The boys won convincingly, 104-46, over the Bubblers, while the girls claimed victory with a score of 98-52. Kye’mere Robinson continued to reign over the jump pits with wins in both the long and triple jump. Owen Clapsadle was another double winner with first-place finishes in the 1600m and 800m races. Gettysburg also continued its success in the relay department, sweeping all three relays. On the girl’s side, there were also several double winners to secure victory. Samantha Campbell was again the distance queen of the track, winning both the 1600m and 3200m. Alexa Codori won both the discus and shot put throws, solidifying her role as a crucial point scorer in the throws department. Caroline Bannak blew away her competition in secure victories in the 100m and 200m.
Both teams will be back in action Thursday, April 3rd at Warrior Stadium in a home meet against Big Spring looking to improve to 4-0.
