Eagles, Ravens and Steelers open with wins as football season takes center stage

The Philadelphia Eagles stopped a late two-point conversion Sunday to defeat the Washington Commanders 24-22 and open the NFL season with a win at Lincoln Financial Field.

Jalen Hurts passed for 203 yards and three touchdowns, including two to Dallas Goedert. Goedert finished with four catches for 77 yards, while Saquon Barkley rushed for 83 yards.

Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes as the Commanders rallied from a 17-9 deficit. Daniels connected with Antonio Williams for a touchdown with about a minute remaining, but the Eagles stopped the ensuing conversion attempt. DeVonta Smith then recovered Washington’s onside kick.

The Baltimore Ravens defeated the Indianapolis Colts 41-23 behind Derrick Henry’s 144 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Lamar Jackson passed for 324 yards and a score and added a rushing touchdown. Zay Flowers caught five passes for a career-high 150 yards and a touchdown before leaving with a hamstring injury.

Pittsburgh opened with a 20-13 win over Atlanta. Aaron Rodgers threw for 221 yards and a touchdown, while T.J. Watt had two sacks and returned an interception 35 yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown.

In college football, Penn State improved to 2-0 under coach Matt Campbell with a 27-9 victory over Temple at Lincoln Financial Field. Rocco Becht threw three touchdown passes, two to Benjamin Brahmer. The Nittany Lions moved from No. 16 to No. 14 in the Associated Press poll.

Texas took over the No. 1 ranking after rallying from a 23-3 fourth-quarter deficit to defeat previous No. 1 Ohio State 24-23. The Longhorns scored 21 unanswered points, taking the lead on Hollywood Smothers’ 1-yard touchdown run with 25 seconds remaining. Georgia is now No. 2, with Notre Dame third.

Gettysburg College suffered a last-minute 27-23 loss to Washington and Lee in its home opener. The Bullets led 23-14 with 9:20 remaining, but Washington and Lee scored twice, including Ryan Clemens’ 7-yard touchdown run with 28 seconds left.

Gettysburg moved to the Generals’ 37-yard line on its final possession before a pass into the end zone fell incomplete as time expired. Sean Clark passed for 249 yards and one touchdown for the Bullets, who fell to 1-1. Washington and Lee earned its first victory over Gettysburg since 1976.

In baseball, the Phillies used a seven-run eighth inning to defeat Atlanta 9-4 and avoid a three-game sweep. Alec Bohm’s two-run double broke a 2-2 tie before Bryson Stott, J.T. Realmuto, Kyle Schwarber and Trea Turner added run-scoring hits.

Philadelphia improved to 83-67 and moved into a tie with the Chicago Cubs for the National League’s top wild-card position. The Phillies also cut Atlanta’s NL East lead to five games.

Pittsburgh helped Philadelphia’s cause with a 4-3 win over the Cubs. Brandon Lowe’s pinch-hit, two-run single put the Pirates ahead as they avoided a sweep and returned to .500 at 75-75.

Baltimore lost 8-1 to Toronto after the Blue Jays hit three consecutive home runs in the fifth inning. The Orioles left 13 runners on base. Washington completed a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Angels with a 6-5 win, scoring four runs in the eighth inning.

At the U.S. Open, Alexander Zverev defeated American Ben Shelton in the men’s final. Zverev, who also won the French Open, became the fourth man in the Open era to capture his first two Grand Slam titles in the same year. Elena Rybakina defeated defending champion Aryna Sabalenka for the women’s championship.

Europe reclaimed golf’s Solheim Cup with a 15-13 victory over the United States in the Netherlands.

Locally, Gettysburg High School improved to 3-0 with a 41-7 football win over Waynesboro Friday night. Littlestown defeated Bermudian Springs 30-13, while New Oxford edged Kennard-Dale 21-20 after stopping a late two-point attempt. Northeastern defeated Biglerville 24-7, and Susquehannock shut out Delone 13-0.

In girls’ tennis, unbeaten New Oxford defeated Chambersburg 4-1, winning two singles matches and sweeping doubles.
