UConn Dominates South Carolina for 12th National Women’s Title
UConn reclaimed its place atop women’s college basketball Sunday night, overpowering No. 1 seed South Carolina 82-59 to capture its 12th NCAA championship—and first since 2016. The No. 2 seed Huskies blazed through the tournament with a championship run that included wins over three No. 1 seeds: USC, UCLA, and the previously undefeated Gamecocks.
The victory marked the culmination of a resilient journey for a program long synonymous with dominance, yet hindered in recent years by injuries and near-misses. Sunday’s win provided a fairytale ending for senior guard Paige Bueckers, who had missed an entire season to injury and now exits UConn with her first national title.
With Bueckers and Azzi Fudd finally healthy, and freshman phenom Sarah Strong putting on a historic postseason, UConn looked every bit the dynasty of old. Fudd and Strong led all scorers with 24 points each, with Strong adding 15 rebounds and five assists. Bueckers chipped in 17 points in her final collegiate game.
UConn controlled the pace early, taking a 19-14 lead after the first quarter and never looking back. Strong’s dominance in the paint set the tone, and her performance capped a record-setting tournament in which she became the highest-scoring freshman in NCAA tournament history.
South Carolina, who entered the game 35-3, struggled to convert offensively, with no player scoring more than 10 points—a championship game record for lowest individual high.
Florida and Houston Set for Championshp Clash in NCAA Men’s Championship
After a thrilling Final Four in San Antonio, the NCAA men’s basketball season comes down to one final game: Florida vs. Houston. Both teams earned their championship spots with dramatic second-half comebacks on Saturday—Florida rallying past Auburn and Houston storming back to defeat Duke.
For Houston, tonight marks a shot at redemption decades in the making. This is the Cougars’ third national title appearance, but they remain in search of their first championship after losses in 1983 and 1984. Despite six Final Four trips—the most of any program without a title—Houston has yet to finish the job. Head coach Kelvin Sampson, one of the most successful active coaches without a ring, looks to finally cross the finish line.
Florida, on the other hand, is back on the championship stage for the first time since its glory days in the mid-2000s. The Gators won back-to-back titles in 2006 and 2007 and now return for a fourth all-time title game appearance. Their only loss in the final came in 2000. While their path to this year’s title game has been steady, their comeback against Auburn proved this team thrives under pressure.
The matchup offers an intriguing contrast in experience and motivation. Houston is fueled by decades of unfinished business, while Florida carries the legacy of past success and aims to reestablish itself among college basketball’s elite.
