Which way should your ceiling fan spin in summer? Here’s the answer

As temperatures climb, setting your ceiling fan to spin in the correct direction can make your home feel cooler – and save you money.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, ceiling fans don’t actually lower a room’s temperature, but their airflow can create a cooling effect that makes it feel more comfortable. In summer, fan blades should rotate counterclockwise, which pushes air downward and produces a wind-chill sensation that cools the skin.

Most ceiling fans have a small switch on the base or motor housing that allows you to reverse the direction of the blades. Some newer models also let you make the change via remote control.

Getting the direction right can help reduce reliance on air conditioning. Many people find they can raise the thermostat a few degrees without sacrificing comfort, potentially lowering energy bills.

In contrast, during winter, fans should be set to clockwise rotation at a low speed. This draws cooler air upward and gently redistributes warm air that has risen to the ceiling.

Switching blade direction is also a great reminder to clean your fan. Dust buildup can reduce efficiency and circulate allergens. Consumer Reports recommends giving ceiling fans a good cleaning at least once per cooling season.

So check your fan’s direction. A simple flip of a switch can boost comfort and cut costs all summer long.
