Winter Storm Orlena to Bring a Foot of Snow Tomorrow and Monday * Gettysburg Snow Emergency Likely to be Issued Tomorrow

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Gettysburg – effective through 8:00 AM on Tuesday, February 2, 2021. Snowfall will begin Sunday and become heavy Sunday night into Monday. TOTAL accumulations will range from 8-14 inches.

Mayor Streeter will likely declare a snow emergency for Gettysburg Borough Sunday afternoon or evening. Once the snow emergency is declared, it will remain in effect until 8:00 AM Tuesday morning, February 2, 2021. The snow emergency will be declared when snow accumulation reaches 2 inches.

The impacts of this storm are expected to be very disruptive with dangerous travel conditions on snow covered roads and low visibility. Travel on Borough roads is not advised during the height of the storm. Snowfall will be a heavy-wet snow, causing some tree limbs and power lines to fall, creating localized power outages. Please remain clear of any downed power lines until utility repairs are complete.

Borough Staff have been coordinating efforts to prepare Gettysburg for the storm and are mobilizing to respond to it. The Public Works Department will be on duty throughout the duration of the storm and until streets and alleys are passable again following the storm. The Borough relies on the understanding, patience, and cooperation of its residents during and after the storm as the public works department is working with a significantly reduced staff at this time.

Main roadways and emergency routes will be the priority, while side streets and alleys will take the longest to clear of snow. The Borough asks for the public’s patience as the Borough’s crews work to keep roads and alleys passable.

All vehicles must be removed from snow emergency routes during a declared snow emergency – enforcement to remove vehicles from snow emergency routes will begin once the snow emergency is declared.  It is advisable to move vehicles before the storm begins.

Residents are encouraged to park vehicles at the Racehorse Alley (RHA) Parking Garage or at the Gettysburg Area Recreation Authority (GARA) on Long Lane until the snow emergency is lifted. Beginning at the time of the posting of this press release, parking fees and parking enforcement are suspended in the RHA Garage until 8:00 AM Tuesday, February 2, 2021.WW
