As Major League Baseball’s non-waiver trade deadline approaches at 6 p.m. ET tonight, teams squeezed in several high-profile deals in the past 24 hours and remain engaged in last-minute negotiations.
The Seattle Mariners landed perhaps the most significant blockbuster, re-acquiring veteran third baseman Eugenio Suárez from the Arizona Diamondbacks. Suárez, a two-time All-Star, has blasted 36 home runs and leads the National League with 87 RBIs this season. In return, Arizona received a package of three prospects: first baseman Tyler Locklear and right-handers Hunter Cranton and Juan Burgos
Meanwhile, the New York Mets revamped their bullpen by acquiring All-Star closer Ryan Helsley from the St. Louis Cardinals. Helsley, who notched 21 saves this season with a 3.00 ERA, is expected to bolster a late-inning corps that’s struggled recently. In exchange, the Cardinals received three prospects including shortstop Jesús Báez and right-handers Nate Dohm and Frank Elissalt.
The Mets also acquired submarine-style reliever Tyler Rogers from the San Francisco Giants, who received a trio of prospects—Jose Butto, Blade Tidwell and outfielder Drew Gilbert—in return
The Philadelphia Phillies acquired perhaps the deadline’s top closer, Jhoan Duran, from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for pitcher Mick Abel and catching prospect Eduardo Tait.
In other deals, the Washington Nationals traded veteran starter Michael Soroka to the Chicago Cubs for infielders Ronny Cruz and Christian Franklin, while Tampa Bay shipped Zack Littell to the Cincinnati Reds in a three-team swap that sent the Dodgers Adam Serwinowski, Brian Van Belle, and others
With the clock ticking, many contenders remain active—rumored targets include Dylan Cease, Steven Kwan, and Luis Robert Jr.—and deals may still come before the deadline strikes.
