Women’s Basketball : Women’s Basketball Continues Rise in National Polls

For the fourth consecutive week, the Gettysburg College women’s basketball team clinched a ranking in both the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and D3hoops.com poll.

The Bullets continue to rise in the national rankings as the team was selected No. 16 in the WBCA Top 25 Poll with 75 points and were picked No. 19 in the D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll with 161 points after being No. 17 and No. 22, respectively, a week ago. The top three nationally ranked teams switched slightly this week with Tufts University (20-0) remaining on top, Hope College (20-0) moved into the No. 2 spot, and Bowdoin College (20-1) slipped down to No. 3 in both national polls. The highest-ranking the Bullets’ have received in program history was No. 13, which occurred during the 1994-95 campaign.

Gettysburg registered its 18th win in a row, breaking the program and Centennial Conference record against Swarthmore College this past Saturday by the final score of 78-62. The Bullets also beat Franklin & Marshall College on the road earlier in the week, 71-53, to tie the winning streak record. At F&M, senior guard Ashley Gehrin (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) played outstanding as she finished with 21 points, making 9-of-15 field goals while pulling down 10 rebounds, and dishing out five assists. Junior Meredith Brown (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) added 12 points and seven rebounds. Against Swarthmore Brown paced the Bullets with 19 points, one-point shy of her career-high, and two rebounds, while freshman Olivia Matto (East Petersburg, Pa./Hill School) came off the bench to notch 10 points three rebounds, and two blocks.

As a team, the Orange and Blue rank third in Division III in three-point percentage (37.8), fifth in field goal percentage (47.2), and ninth in defensive rebounds per game (32.5).

Gettysburg, who is the only conference team nationally ranked, will play at Ursinus College (7-12, 6-8 CC) this Thursday at 6 p.m.
