World Cup, Carolina title highlight busy sports weekend

The FIFA World Cup took center stage Sunday as group play continued around the globe, with the United States looking to build momentum after a strong start to the tournament. Soccer fans were treated to a full slate of matches, including Cape Verde’s World Cup debut against Spain and a highly anticipated Iran-New Zealand matchup in the evening session.

On the ice, the Carolina Hurricanes captured the Stanley Cup for the first time in 20 years, completing a dominant postseason run with a 3-0 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights in the deciding game of the championship series.

Veteran captain Jordan Staal earned playoff MVP honors after helping lead Carolina to a remarkable 16-3 postseason record. Rookie goaltender Brandon Bussi delivered one of the storylines of the playoffs, stopping 22 shots in the title-clinching shutout after taking over as the starter during the Final.

The championship came just a day after New York celebrated its first NBA title in 53 years. Excitement remains high across the city following the Knicks’ victory over San Antonio in the NBA Finals. Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced a championship parade for Thursday in Manhattan, with additional details expected this week. Thousands of fans poured into the streets after Saturday night’s victory, and celebrations have continued throughout the city.

In Major League Baseball, the Philadelphia Phillies’ offensive struggles continued Sunday as they were shut out 4-0 by the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Baltimore Orioles also came up short, falling 5-2 to the San Diego Padres.

Washington enjoyed the best day among the region’s clubs. The Nationals routed the Seattle Mariners 10-1, continuing their strong play as the season approaches its midway point.

The Pittsburgh Pirates dropped a 4-2 decision to the Miami Marlins.

Elsewhere, the New York Yankees defeated Toronto 8-3, the Mets topped Atlanta 8-1, and the Minnesota Twins edged St. Louis 5-4. One of the day’s most unusual scores came in Colorado, where the Rockies exploded for a 23-9 win over the Athletics.
