Junior Sean Thompson (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro South) posted a technical fall and major decision to add to his team-leading season win total, but Gettysburg College wasn’t as fortunate in the team scoring, dropping a pair of Centennial Conference duals to host Ursinus College and United States Merchant Marine Academy Saturday afternoon.

Match Highlights

  • The Bears and Bullets opted to start things off in the middle of the lineup with the hosts winning seven of the first eight bouts. Junior Marc Larson (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) tallied his 20th win of the season, scoring an 8-4 win over Jason Zollers at 165 pounds.
  • Gettysburg finished the match with back-to-back wins by Thompson and freshman Eric Mougalian (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon). Thompson posted his second technical fall of the season, running up 17 points in just over two minutes against Colin Monahan at 141. Mougalian added a forfeit win at 149.

Match Highlights

  • The Mariners won the opening two matches before a three-match win streak by the Bullets. Thompson kicked off the run by claiming a 10-2 major decision against Jace Garza at 141. Mougalian followed with an 8-3 win over Rodman Rupp at 149.
  • Sophomore Ray Martin (Downingtown, Pa./West Chester Henderson) racked up his 16th pin of the season at 157 pounds, downing Luke Gauthier in 1:26.

 
By the Numbers

  • Thompson improved to 27-13 on the year. The junior continued his ascension on Gettysburg’s career wins list and moved into 17th with a record of 78-39.
  • Larson secured his first career 20-win season and improved to 20-11. He is the fourth Gettysburg grappler to reach 20 wins this winter, joining Thompson, Martin, and senior Colin Devlin (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin).
  • Martin improved to 24-12 with his 16th pin of the year. He is tied with Matt Shank ’08 for third on the program’s season list and is just three shy of season record holder Lenny Ogozalek ’18.
  • Mougalian has won five of his last six bouts and improved to 16-15.

 
The Series
Ursinus improved to 27-11-1 against Gettysburg. Merchant Marine captured its 14th-straight win over the Bullets and leads the series 18-8.
