Junior Sean Thompson (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro South) put an exclamation point on the end of the dual season for Gettysburg College with a first-period pin against Elizabethtown College on Saturday. The Blue Jays claimed eight of 10 bouts to secure the team win 33-9.

Match Highlights

  • Thompson trailed 4-1 after surrendering a pair of takedowns to Colton Rex at 141 pounds. The junior followed up an escape by going on the offensive and powered his way through Rex’s grasp to place the Elizabethtown wrestler’s shoulders to the mat with 56 seconds left in the first period.
  • Elizabethtown pulled out close decisions at 149 and 174 as part of a four-match win streak. Freshman Brendan Loder (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) put Gettysburg back in the win column with a 12-5 win over Jacob Latham. Loder earned a takedown in the opening period and added an escape and takedown to start the second. The first-year made a run at a major decision with three takedowns in the final period of action.

 
By the Numbers

  • Gettysburg fell to 8-14 in dual competitions. Elizabethtown moved to 2-2.
  • Thompson improved his season record to 28-14 and posted his eighth pin of the season. His is one victory shy of a personal season best. The junior is also one win short of becoming the 17th Bullet to reach 80 in a career.
  • Loder improved his season record to 11-17.

Match Highlights

  • Nine Bullets competed at the Messiah Open on Saturday. Sophomore Kelvin Cupay (Beach Park, Ill./Warren Township) produced the best finish by placing fourth at 157 pounds. Cupay won his first match by major decision (11-3) and added a 14-10 win in the consolation semifinals. He fell 7-6 to Adam Kirsch from Penn College in the third-place bout.
  • Senior Traken Sutton (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield) posted two wins in the 165 bracket. Sutton won his opening bout by major decision 11-2 and logged an 8-2 win in the consolation round.

 
Next Up
Gettysburg heads to the Centennial Conference Championship hosted by Muhlenberg College next Saturday (Feb. 15). Opening matches are set for 10 a.m.
