Written in the stars: zodiac signs and reading preferences

by Victoria Freeny

Libraries are full of systems designed to help readers find the perfect book – genres, reader’s advisory tools, and staff recommendations – but sometimes it’s fun to look to the stars. Astrology has long offered a playful framework for understanding personality traits, and when paired with reading habits, it becomes a charming way to spark curiosity and conversation.

Before diving in, a quick note: these pairings are casual and creative, based on broad astrological traits and meant purely for fun. They’re not definitive or scientific – just a lighthearted way to explore new titles and genres.

Aquarius (Jan 20–Feb 18)
Innovative and unconventional, Aquarius gravitates toward books that challenge systems and imagine new futures. Think speculative fiction, social commentary, and “weird but brilliant” reads like Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel or Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.

Pisces (Feb 19–Mar 20)
Dreamy and empathetic, Pisces readers love lyrical prose, mythology, and emotional depth. Immersive, escapist stories such as Circe by Madeline Miller or The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde offer the feeling-driven reading experience they crave.

Aries (Mar 21–Apr 19)
Fast-paced and bold, Aries wants momentum. Survival stories, rebellions, and high-stakes plots – like The Martian by Andy Weir or epic classics such as Moby-Dick by Herman Melville – keep their attention locked in.

Taurus (Apr 20–May 20)
Comfort-loving Taurus savors rich atmosphere and indulgent storytelling. Slow-burn romances and lush fiction like The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern or Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen suit their pleasure-centered reading style.

Gemini (May 21–Jun 20)
Curious and restless, Gemini thrives on variety. Books with multiple voices, sharp dialogue, or essay-style formats – Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty or The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde – keep their minds engaged.

Cancer (Jun 21–Jul 22)
Emotional and nostalgic, Cancer seeks comfort reads centered on family and healing. Warm, heart-forward stories like Little Women by Louisa May Alcott or The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune feel like a literary hug.

Leo (Jul 23–Aug 22)
Dramatic and expressive, Leo loves bold characters and glamorous narratives. Showstopping reads such as The Great Gatsby F. Scott Fitzgerald or The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid bring the spectacle.

Virgo (Aug 23–Sep 22)
Analytical Virgo appreciates structure, craftsmanship, and depth. Thoughtful mysteries or complex literary works like Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky or The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt satisfy their detail-oriented minds.

Libra (Sep 23–Oct 22)
Romantic and aesthetic-driven, Libra enjoys beautifully written stories about relationships and balance. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and emotionally rich modern fiction fit seamlessly.

Scorpio (Oct 23–Nov 21)
Intense and transformative, Scorpio gravitates toward dark, psychologically rich stories. Dracula by Bram Stoker and Gone Girl by Gilligan Flynn deliver the emotional stakes they crave.

Sagittarius (Nov 22–Dec 21)
Adventurous Sagittarius reads to expand their worldview. Epic journeys and reflective memoirs like The Odyssey by Homer or Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer fuel their curiosity.

Capricorn (Dec 22–Jan 19)
Purpose-driven Capricorn values ambition and legacy. Serious historical fiction or classics like Macbeth by William Shakespeare and The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett offer meaningful payoff.

Whether or not you follow astrology, pairing books with zodiac signs is a reminder that there’s no single “right” way to read. Sometimes the best discovery tool isn’t the catalog, but curiosity, creativity, and maybe a little cosmic inspiration.
