YWCA “Mission Moment” and invitation to Zoom talk by local attorney Kristen Rice

I want to share an issue of which I was recently made aware (or more aware) – that of the difficulty for people transitioning out of prison to mainstream society.

It started with picking up a loaf of bread for my daughter. She specified that she wanted Dave’s Killer Bread – any kind would be fine. I just wrote it on the list and didn’t give it another thought.

When I unloaded it on my return, I casually asked, “Why Dave’s Killer Bread? Was it that good?” She told me to read the wrapper. Thinking I was going to read that the secret ingredient was kale or turmeric or whatever is the latest on the nutritional front, I was surprised instead to read about Dave Dahl, his fifteen year stint in prison, his brother Glenn who gave him a second chance at the family bakery, and that one third of the employees at the Oregon bakery have a criminal background and have been given a second chance by the Dahls.

Wow.

Well, needless to say, I now am a committed Dave’s Killer Bread consumer. (And it’s very tasty as well – I recommend the Everything Bagels and the White Bread Done Right. The brand is available here in Gettysburg at the Giant and Kennies.)

Then, two months later I was scrolling through TED talks for something to listen to at work and I came across “4 steps to hiring fairly and supporting criminal justice reform.” (12-12-2021 – Nyra Jordan). I encourage you to take 14 minutes out of your busy schedule and listen to this compelling talk about giving “justice involved” job seekers a second chance.

This served as an aha moment which led me back to my Dave’s Killer Bread experience. I searched online for Dave’s Killer Bread and recommend to you daveskillerbread.com/secondchances. Be sure to scroll to the bottom and read the stories of some of the people who work there.

And all of this segues so smoothly into the invitation to join us in a Mission Moment Zoom talk by local attorney Kristin Rice on March 8 at 4:00 p.m. on the New Jim Crow. https://us06web.zoom.us/j/86533795855?pwd=VWw3QTRWNlNsMXY4eUVwK2JKcTBpZz09
