YWCA Offers summer camps and basketball training courses

The YWCA Gettysburg & Adams County, located at 909 Fairfield Rd. in Gettysburg is offering camp and training programs for children this summer.

The following programs are offered:

STEMSpire Grades 3-6; June 17-21 2024 / 8:30 am – 3:30 pm

STEMspire: Exploring the Past, Building the Future will be held from June 17 -21 / 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.  In this week-long camp students in grades 3-6 will explore, invent, build, and learn using a variety of materials. Creative thinking, designing, and team-building skills will help us explore science in the morning and the significance of the Battle of Gettysburg in the afternoon. Each day students will have something to make and take. The camp fee is $250 for members and $260 for nonmembers. Scholarship applications are available by emailing membership@ywcagettysburg.org and need to be received as early as possible but no later than June 3.  *Campers bring a packed lunch & water bottle daily*

Out of the Box: Cardboard Engineering Grade 2-8; June 24-28, 2024 / 9:00 – 3:00

Out of the Box: Cardboard Engineering STEM Camp will take your imagination to the next level. Join us for a week of exploration, design, and construction as we transform ordinary cardboard into extraordinary creations!  During the camp, students will:

1. Learn the basics of engineering principles through hands-on cardboard construction.
2. Develop teamwork and collaboration skills as you design and build your dream business.
3. Explore problem-solving and critical-thinking strategies to overcome creative hurdles.
4. Unleash your artistic talents with themed designs and imaginative details.
5. Gain valuable experience in planning, budgeting, resource management (cardboard supplies, that is!), and presenting.

Here’s the challenge for Grades 5-8:

Imagine a collaborative and interactive community with a business or service you design! Think arcade, fashion/clothing store, theater, restaurant, salon, car wash, construction site, airport, sporting event venue, amusement park, mini-golf course, or even an animal rescue! Now, picture all the details that would make your business come to life – signage, product displays, and even working mechanisms!  You will share your design at a showcase for “city planners” (your family) at the end of the week.

Challenge for Grades 2-4:  

Imagine forts, vehicles, working robots, playhouses, and animal sculptures with working mechanisms for young children to enjoy. Brainstorm ideas and form design groups around the theme that most interests you. Design and build toddler-sized dramatic play structures from cardboard. Include working mechanisms to help develop pre-schoolers fine and gross motor skills while learning through dramatic play.  You will share your design at a showcase for “toy manufacturers” (your family) at the end of the week. 

The camp fee is $250 for members and $260 for nonmembers.

Basketball Skill Development is aptly named. Skill improvement is noticeable during each session as participants lean into Lawrence’s instructional style and trust the method. Lawrence Williams is an Adams County Sports Hall of Famer, owner of Twitch Athletics, and YWCA Member! 

The program is for 4th grade through College age on Tuesday and Thursday evenings as well as Saturdays at the YWCA of Gettysburg and Adams County.  The current series of 4-week sessions runs through June 15. There are 12 sessions in the 4 weeks. Participants can choose to pay-as-you-go, or purchase 5-session or 8-session packages for a specific 4-week period. Another 4-week series will start June 18.  Scholarships are available from the WellSpan Inspire Youth Development Grant award to the YWCA.
