The long history of the property that was once the Abraham Spangler Farm and later the Gettysburg Country Club is taking a new direction with a proposed multi-building, multi-story apartment rental complex at 730 Chambersburg St., on the corner of Route 30 and Country Club Lane.
The plan for the Residence at Willoughby Run, proposed by Trone Rental Company of Hanover, would include 8 buildings, each between one and three stories high, across the entire property. The main entrance would be onto Country Club Lane.
The 14.5 acre property, which has recently hosted Sydney’s Restaurant as well as public swimming pools and tennis courts, was purchased in November 2020 by the Trone Family Trust for $800,000. The stone “lower clubhouse” still houses the Gettysburg Day Spa.
According to a document provided by the National Park Service, the parcel is significant to first day Gettysburg 1863 Civil War Battle action and is within the “legislated boundary” of the Gettysburg National Military Park. The NPS expressed concerns about fencing, retaining walls, light pollution, and storm water management.
The land use plan will be considered by the Cumberland Township Planning Commission at its July 14 meeting before going to the Board of Supervisors for discussion and potential approval.
The construction plans will be submitted later with the building permit application.

Chris Trone is a bit like Boss Hogg from The Dukes of Hazzard or Mr. Potter from It’s A Wonderful life. His local monopoly now controls so many shopping centers, car washes, storage units, apartments and housing units. Banks are happy to give him even more because they know he can and will raise the rents. And just like Mr Potter, you can’t run from him. As usual, it’s the poor that are hurt the most.
Definitely need more apartments in Gettysburg area. There’s enough “ hallowed” ground already. If built, please make them properly, not like the apartment(s) I moved into brand new where I hear my neighbor in next apartment snoring, every word she speaks, coughing, etcetc as if it’s in my apt. Please build with tenants in mind.
Should be one floor patio homes to keep with the aesthetics of the surrounding environment and community behind it
Who are these apartment targeted towards? Will they accept Housing Choice Vouchers? How many bedrooms? Are these apartments truly addressing the needs of Adams County citizens or just a profit for a developer?
