2021: The year at the Connection

Read about how small independent local online news startups like Gettysburg Connection are using reader support to provide news to local communities.

Happy New Year everyone.

I’d like to take this opportunity on the first day of 2022 to reflect for a moment on the state of Gettysburg Connection, with the goal of keeping you all up to date on our operation, our progress, and our plans.

Our mission is not as important or expensive as that of the recently-launched James Webb Telescope that will fly a million miles from Earth and start taking pictures of the cosmos, but sometimes it seems just as complicated.

The work I do every day seems ideally designed to test (and hopefully extend) the cognitive abilities of an aging senior. It involves complex multi-tasking of organizing, planning, budgeting, accounting, programming, and marketing, with a dash of writing thrown in.

I’m waiting for the day when I decide I don’t feel like doing it anymore, but for now I’m very much enjoying it. I think it is a service to our community and I know those of you who are sponsors, members, and partners agree. Thank you.

I just finished the company’s 2021 Annual Report and the news is rewarding. In part because we received a grant to launch our outreach text messaging program Pasa La Voz, we had enough revenue to pay the bills and to have a bit left over. That means we are good to continue publishing for another year.

It was a year of consolidation and growth as our readership stayed steady at about 175,000 readers over the course of the year, while our mailing list grew from about 1,800 to over 3,000.  120 members, 7 partners, and 20 sponsors and advertisers helped us in our mission this year.

I’d like to remind you all that Gettysburg Connection is a community project. I can’t do it alone and I’m counting on your help. Your input helps us determine what to publish, when we publish it, and how it is delivered to you. Your input brings the impact of our reporting to life through your comments on our stories, your participation in our contests, and your sharing our work with others.

Most importantly, your input provides feedback to us that what we do matters. Will you take a moment and consider how you can support our work this year?

Thank you and happy 2021
