All across the state, residents and businesses have been facing rising electricity and utility bills. One thing that can help Pennsylvanians save money is improving energy efficiency, so that they’re not paying for energy they don’t need. And as an added bonus, increasing energy efficiency can help protect our environment and health at the same time.
One way to lower energy bills and reduce air pollution would be to implement statewide appliance efficiency standards. The legislature just moved in the right direction by passing House Bill 660 out of the state house. If signed into law, this bill is estimated to save Pennsylvanians 7.7 billion dollars on utility bills by 2050. It would also reduce air pollution like Nitrogen Oxide, which causes respiratory problems such as asthma. I thank Representatives O’Mara and Mehaffie for leading this effort, as well as Chair Fiedler and Leader Bradford for getting the bill out of the house. I encourage and ask the State Senate to move forward with this bill as quickly as possible to help protect Pennsylvanians’ wallets and our planet.
